Death Notice - Bernard McGrath - 1939
The Braidwood Review and District Advocate (NSW : 1914 - 1954), Tue 7 Mar 1939, Page 3:
SUDDEN DEATH
Death came with startling suddenness to Mr. Bernard McGrath on Friday last, when, in the middle or a conversation with a friend, he collapsed and passed away a few minutes later. He had been working on the property at Warrumbucca that morning doing some ploughing when he became ill and went up to Mr. Geo. Hush's place to get one of the boys to take him to the doctor in Braidwood. Later in the day he transacted some business in town and appeared to be quite all right. He was sitting on the steps in front of the Courthouse hostel conversing with Mr. M. Coffey. In the middle of a sentence he ceased talking and slumped over. Mr. Coffey spoke to him, but received no reply. He hurriedly summoned help and carried the unconscious man inside, Immediately getting in touch with the doctor, who was on the scene in a few minutes. The unfortunate man, however, had passed away without regaining consciousness.
Born at Warri, on the Shoalhaven River, 62 years ago, the deceased had lived in the district all his life. He followed the occupation of a road contractor for some years, later securing a compact little farm near Warrumbucca, where he has lived ever since. "Barney," as he was familiarly known, was a hard
working, jovial man, who possessed a ready wit and a keen sense of humour. Fair and above board in all his dealings, a genuine friend and neighbour, and a man whose word was his bond, it was hardly surprising that he did not have an enemy in the whole district. Generous to a degree, he many times lent assistance to people in better circumstances than he was in. His home was open to all comers, hospitality being dispensed with a lavish hand. He was
the youngest of a family of 13. Of these no fewer than six brothers died during the past three years, until now only one brother (Thomas) and two sisters (Miss Annie and Miss Alice) survive. The two latter lived with the deceased at Warrumbucca. It is not expected that an inquest will be necessary. Only quite recently the deceased disposed of portion of his property to Mr. R. Williams, of Mongarlowe. The funeral took place at Braidwood on Saturday, being largely attended. Rev. Fr. Devine conducted the service at the grave side.
