Braidwood's "Grand Old Man" Had Stirring Memories:

Braidwood's "Grand
Old Man" Had
Stiwing Memories
KNOWN as the "grand old man"
of Braidwood, Mr. John McGrath,
Coghlll, died recently. He was born
in Ireland 80 yours ago, and came to
Australia with his parent in 1865 on
a sailing ship, said to be the first iron
vessel to come to this country,
After spending short periods at
Greenwell Point and Corang, the
family settled down at Colombo. They
were engaged as shepherds, but later
acquired a nice property, Mr, J.
McGrath struck out for himself 66
years ago when he moved to Coghill.
He went in for farming and dairying,
but later took on road work and
stone work.
Braidwood "Review" says that the
quality of his work is indicated by
the many old stone culverts and
chimneys which he built and which
are still standing. Foundations con-
structed by Mr. McGrath and his
brothers for buildings in the town are
as sold to-day as when they were
put in.
Mr. McGrath told many stories of
the mining days, the explolts of bush-
rangers, floods and droughts. He often
spoke of the tribes of aborigines which
roamed the district. Colombo had its
own particular tribe and king, and
big corroboroos were often held there.
He often spoke of a bull fight at
Colombo, when two bulls joined battle.
In a short tlino, cattle from miles
around were attracted by either the
sound of conflict or the smell of
blood. There were no fences in those
days. Very soon other fights de-
veloped amongst the cattle and several
were killed and many maimed.
According to Mr. McGrath, the
bulls fought for a couple of days and
were battered practically insensible.
The battle ground presented a scene
of dead cattle, trees knocked over and
the earth torn and rooted up. Men
on horseback endeavored to stop the
fight and dogs were brought in, but
to no avail.
Besides the widow, a family of six
sons and two daughters survive. They
are Terence, Jack, Patrick, Annie,
Joseph, Hannah, Michael and Barry
McGrath (U), JOHN ( COGHILL ) (I142)

2 1877 calculated on age at death being 62 (as per headstone), but unable to locate birth cert at NSW or VIC BDM McGrath, Bernard (I65)

3 A headstone for Joyce was not commissioned by Joyce's husband, Neville. When the sons grew older the eldest son advised Neville he was going to have one made however Neville disagreed, resulting in no headstone being made. At the time of Joyce's passing, Neville purchased the burial plot next to Joyce for when his time on earth was done. When Neville passed away in 1988, the two eldest sons contacted Liverpool Cemetery to make arrangements. They were then advised the plot next to their mothers had been used by someone else. Upon insisting their father had paid for the plot the cemetery advised that they re-sold it "as Neville wasn't using it". The cemetery then went on to advise that Joyce had been buried deeper than usual and Neville could be buried in the plot above their mother. This is how Neville and Joyce came to be buried together in the same plot (source for this information is Joyce's second son). Cameron, Joyce May (P21)

5 A Maud Cameron was born 1893, Yarra, Vic to Charles Cameron and Annie Downes, but not of this family.

VIC BDM 29229/1893

6 Ann's surname is spelled "Downes" on her marriage certificate, which includes her own signature.

Her maiden name is spelled "Downs" on Ruban's birth certificate, but was not written by herself.
Downes, Ann Mary (P101)

7 At the time of Joseph's birth his father John was aged 33 years old and his mother Susan was aged 38.  McGrath, Joseph (P54)

8 Birth of Joseph McGrath.

At the time of Joseph's birth in 1887 there were 3 living male siblings and 1 living female sibling. Unfortunately, one additional male and one additional female sibling had passed away.

This means the births (and deaths) of these 6 children (excluding Joseph) fell between 1876 and 1887.

20 Enlisting for service at Sydney, 29 year old Duncan was noted to have dark hair and blue eyes. His religion was listed as Presbyterian and he was sent to fight in France on 21 Dec 1916. Repeatedly wounded in action, Duncan did not return to his homeland of Australia until 4 Jan 1919 and was discharged on the 13 Mar 1920.

At the time of enlistment, Duncan and his wife Hilda were living in Alexandria, Sydney. Duncan served in the 53rd battalion and prior to enlisting worked as a Fitters Assistant.

Duncan was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal
Cameron, Private Duncan Charles (P135)

21 Enlisting for service at Wollongong, 23 year old Neville was noted to have fair hair and blue eyes. His religion was listed as Church of England and Neville quickly became known as a "procurement specialist" - which meant he had remarkable skills at "procuring" whatever it was his superiors deemed necessary for the war.

By 20 Feb 1942, Neville was being charge for disobeying lawful commands and falling asleep at his post while on duty as a sentinel.

By 9th Jan 1943, a warrant was issued for his arrest. The charge? Desertion. By the 19th Jan, 1943 Neville was officially declared an illegal absentee. This ruling would later be reversed by the Army after Neville was court martialled and the judge dismissed all charges.
